Background Information

Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world.

HIV/AIDS has become a pervasive and devastating problem in Malawi over the past several decades. Upwards of 15 percent of the population is infected with HIV/AIDS and 240 people die daily. 190 children become orphans everyday. With so many deaths, thousands of children have been left parentless, without care and homeless. Some live in child-led households, some are taken in by caregivers whose families are already inflated in size, and some are cared for by abusive neighbors or relatives. The increasing numbers of sick and orphaned have placed an unprecedented demand on community and health resources. Forced to care for their neighbor’s and their neighbor’s children, society’s traditional form, and even the traditional family structure have been altered drastically.

Despite tremendous poverty in this nation of 13.6 million people, its natives proudly refer to their homeland as the warm heart of africa.
