Welcome to LuziCare.com! During my several weeks in Malawi, I spent a great deal of time working with Luzi Orphan Care Organization, a community organization founded and operated by Malawian volunteers. In the poor, rural communities served by Luzi’s programs I encountered many people who had no access to healthcare, no means of transporting themselves or their sick relatives to the central hospital, no means to pay for expensive therapies and prescriptions that could save their lives. I met Jenny in the slums just outside Lilongwe. Her cousin told us that she lost her job some years back when she contracted HIV. Undesirable to any employer because of her HIV status, she resorted to prostitution. When we encountered Jenny she was emaciated and weak, six weeks pregnant, but not showing. We took her to a local clinic where the attending physician informed us that she would have to return daily for intravenous treatment until her strength improved. Their in-patient ward was full and so too was the central hospital. We left Malawi the next day. Without any means of transporting herself to the local clinic only three miles from her home, Jenny died two weeks later. This project was inspired by Jenny’s story. I encourage you explore these pages to learn a little more about our project. Return periodically to read the blog and get updates regarding upcoming fundraising events. You can donate very easily online by accessing the donate page above. With your contributions we can make healthcare accessible for hundreds, if not thousands of people living in some of the poorest communities on the planet. This website was created in September of 2007 to raise money for an aid project I conceived after my travels to the small sub-Saharan African country of Malawi during the summer of 2006. At the time I was interning with a young Boston-based non-profit organization called the Pendulum Project in and around the capital city of Lilongwe. During my trip I was confronted with the grave public health crisis facing a region ravaged by HIV/AIDS.
